This may seem pointless to those who don’t venture north of 86th street on the East Side, but this is kind of a big deal.
Well… it could kind of be kind of a big deal. There’s one main subway line on the East Side, right? The “green line” 4/5/6 on Lexington and the trains are always crowded, even when I’m coming home at 4am. The second avenue train line is in the works but it wont reach my hood, the line will end at 96th street the informal border of the Upper East Side and East Harlem. So that won’t help me. Yeah, maybe East Harlem is a bit hood, but damn!
These machines on 86th and 1st ave could signify more machines to come, perhaps on 96th street and then 106th street and maybe 116th street. So I may not have to walk from 1st to Lex to get a metrocard. And more importantly, the presence of said machines would mean that New Yorkers acknowledge there is a whole new world which exists beyond 96th. Not that I want more gentrification in El Barrio, especially since Target opened. But its just nice to know that we are not forgotten.
